With 191 State parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), the existence of effective Independent Monitoring Mechanisms (IMMs) has great potential to improve the enjoyment of their rights by persons with disabilities in most countries of the world. Article 33 (2) of the Convention mandates States parties to establish frameworks for monitoring the implementation of the treaty. As part of a joint UNPRPD Fund Programme, OHCHR and the UNDP have joined efforts to develop a comprehensive UN Practical Guide and a central repository of national IMMs. This process builds on the CRPD Committee’s guidance, issued in 2016.
