About the event:

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) wishes to organize an exhibition.

The exhibition aims to showcase the ASEAN’s collective response to disasters. As one of the most disaster-prone regions of the world, ASEAN has resolved to harness the individual and collective strengths of different sectors and stakeholders in other to effectively respond to disasters inside and outside the region through a “One ASEAN One Response” approach.

 

About ASEAN

ASEAN was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, and comprises ten countries: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam. The organisation works towards achieving economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region; promoting regional peace and stability through abiding respect for justice and the rule of law; and promoting Southeast Asian studies.

 

About the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre)

The AHA Centre is an intergovernmental organisation based in Jakarta, Indonesia that facilitates cooperation and coordination among ASEAN Member States and with partners such as the United Nations and international organisations for disaster management and emergency response in the ASEAN region. Between 2004 and 2014, the Southeast Asian region recorded more than 50% of the total global disaster fatalities. (About the AHA Centre, n.d.) As one of the most disaster-prone regions of the world, ASEAN has resolved to harness the individual and collective strengths of different sectors and stakeholders in other to effectively respond to disasters inside and outside the region through a “One ASEAN One Response” approach. The AHA Centre’s key functions are Disaster Monitoring, Preparedness and Response and Capacity Building. Disaster Monitoring By monitoring and sharing information about hazards and disasters in the region, the AHA Centre aims to strengthen coordination efforts so as to reduce loss of life and damage to property through the identification of hazards and risks prior to their impact, and by increasing warning time. Preparedness and Response As part of its preparedness and response efforts, the AHA Centre develops various tools and guidance to accelerate the mobilisation of resources between ASEAN Member States and its partners in times of disasters. Some of the available resources include stockpiled relief items and the ASEAN Emergency Response and Assessment Team (ERAT). Capacity Building The AHA Centre supports the National Disaster Management Organisations across ASEAN Member States through capacity building. There are two signature courses in the ASEAN region, which are ASEAN-ERAT and the AHA Centre Executive (ACE) Programme. The AHA Centre also participates in various capacity building activities and exercises within the region.
